MALSR Demolition & Remedial Action

Cold Bay, Alaska

In 2017, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) determined a need for the decommissioning of the Medium Intensity Approach Lighting System with Runway Alignment Indicator Lights (MALSR) located on Runway 32 of the Cold Bay, AK, airport.

The project objectives, as outlined by FAA, included removal and disposal of the MALSR and previously decommissioned equipment stored onsite, lead-contaminated soil removal, and a final release investigation.

As a contractor of choice for the FAA, Ahtna Global was selected to perform the necessary efforts to accomplish FAA’s cleanup mission.

Ahtna completed the FAA’s objectives on time, within budget, and with zero safety incidents. Specific activities included:

  • Demolition and debris removal, including MALSR Building Demolition, Shop Building debris removal, and MALSR Building control panel removal.
  • Release Investigation of MALSR Building to assess the possibility of a release of lead to the soil.
  • Field screenings and excavation of lead-impacted soil.
  • Waste disposal of all hazardous and non-hazardous debris from the project site.
  • Complete site restoration.
